About Maria Ressa

Ressa was born in 1963 in Manali. At that time, he lost his father. However, he did not get close to her father or mother physically. After her father’s death, his mother moved to the United States. Ressa and her sister lived with her father family.

Ressa studied Biology and Theater as an undergraduate at University of Princeton. She completed his bachelor’s degree in English and received a theater and dance certificate in 1986.

After she was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to study political theatre at the Philippines Diliman University,where she also taught several journalism degree as a faculty member in the university.


Maria Ressa of the Philippines was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2021 along with Dmitry Muratov, the Russian editor. In an interview with The Hindu, Miss Resa, author of the upcoming book How to Stand Up to a Dictator, talks about her fight with the Philippine government and ‘Big Tech’ social media companies.

Let’s take a look at some of the comments she made in interviews –

1) It is not since 1935 that the Nobel Peace Prize went to a journalist, (Carl Von Ossietzky) who wrote about the Nazi regime in Germany’s remilitarisation plan. So what do you think is the message the Nobel Peace Committee is sending in 2021?

His comment was, this is a special moment where exactly what happened after 1935. I have always believed in the argument that our information is an ecosystem that is like an atomic bomb. But we need to be united globally, because this unity will be the answer to the problem. We have to try to solve the problem in a united manner. This information was seen after World War II, when they formed the National League and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Where values ​​were given priority.

If you ask me, I can say ‘technological standards’, where the role of standing by people is given priority, not money. In this context, he further commented that it is a place holder for all the journalists in the world who find it so difficult to do their job. Here we can hope that this creative destruction will take us to a place that is better than where we are.

2) Both Philippines and India are on the list of Top 10 countries where journalists have been killed or targeted. For journalists, the growing threat is coming from democratically elected, populist, and increasingly authoritarian regimes worldwide. What do you think led to the rise of populism?

If it is good then they will see that the journalists have lost the ability of gatekeeping towards the past. Only in Ukraine to reveal different realities for the first time in the world. An example of this is the Russian people’s information campaign in the 2014 election campaign.

3)The counter argument is that social media, big tech companies have democratised expression, given everyone a platform. Why do you think they are, as you describe, an agent for authoritarianism and not an agent for the people’s right to know?

In this context, he said, let’s go to 2011 and see how the Arab Spring turned into a more winter. The government thinks that micro targeting vulnerabilities can be exploited, and those vulnerabilities were used for products. It can also be said that the government started using those tools. Jam Mark Zuckerberg said, “It’s a freedom of speech issue, but here’s what the comedian Ranjit has to say, it’s a ‘freedom of reach problem’.”

One study found that words spoken out of anger spread faster than the truth, and it is not known how much truth there is behind it. If social media platforms are biased against the essence, they will be biased against journalism.

4)Tell us a little bit about your own journey fighting the strongman leader President Duterte, leading up to your arrest in 2019.

The President of the Philippines is democratically elected. But according to many digital achievement plaintiffs, he took over all power once he became president and changed it from the inside out.
During his reign, he killed about 19 journalists, including 63 lawyers and more than 400 human rights activists in a bloody war.

For the truth, the war made me cringe at the thought of how many people had died. Because in 2012 the rappler was set up with twenty young employees. Where the information was first published, showed people how to manipulate online. I wrote a series on the Internet called Arms Promotion about how social media affects a person. There have even been threats of arrest.

5)What are your suggestions for journalists just starting out? Is there a toolkit on how to deal with a tough state?

First of all, the journalist, the news agency will talk about that before [will continue] when we are competing against the opponent. We are on the same side. We are social for the same when it is a battle of truth, and especially, in video. In the fight for truth, the way forward. This is an amazing time for a number of journalists, because the mission was not as important as it is today.

Technically, a virtual performance is any performance / lecture / presentation where the

presenter is not present at your location. As we adjust to the ‘Quarantine’ ways of life, we know

that the dance events and gatherings will not be a possibility for the foreseeable future.

Observing this spectacle, what is the situation of artists during this lockdown period? To find an

answer to these rising queries, Ritopratim Chowdhury from ‘ Words’ went on for an interview

with Souvik Chakroborty, a kathak dancer (Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar awardee, 2014).

“The lockdown has forced the art world to migrate online. Since lockdown, the concerts or the

shows are happening online in different social media. It’s a good thing for the viewers but not for

the artists. Viewers can watch it whenever they want and however they want. I did 6 to 7 concerts

in last 3 months and most of them were free of cost. When these concerts happened to be on

stage, we were paid but now we are not getting paid, not even a penny. Still, we can’t stop doing

these concerts, it’s the only way to keep in touch with your art.” He further added, “It is very easy

to perform on a stage. On a virtual platform, you cannot concentrate on your performance

completely as you have to keep in mind all the technical things too like the camera, the frame,

the light, the angle, and most importantly a good internet connection. The performing space

matters a lot in this case which is itself a major drawback as most of the artists fail to manage a

perfect space to perform and shoot.” He further added, “Now-a-days, things are becoming very

commercial. The richness and the essence of Indian classical music and dance are missing.”, he

exclaimed with grief.

The lockdown has robbed artists of their canvas and stage. As the cultural events have been put

on hold due to this lockdown, artists who are dependent on their art for survival, are facing acute

hardships these days.

সন্ধ্যে সাতটা, বালিগঞ্জ ৪৯এ মহানির্বান রোডে ৯ই জানুয়ারি ২০২১ এ, সুসজ্জিত ক্যাফের সামনে পরিবেশিত হয়েছিল এই ফ্যাশন শো। সেই সন্ধেই ক্যাফেটি যেভাবে সেজে উঠেছিল তা সত্যিই অতুলনীয়। এই সাজসজ্জার সাথে বিভিন্ন মডেলদের বিভিন্ন সাজে সেজে ওঠা এক অন্য মাত্রা এনে দিয়েছিল ফ্যাশান শো তে। তারা ভুলে যাননি বর্তমান পরিস্থিতির কথা। করোনাকালের কথা মাথায় রেখে কয়েকজন মডেল মাস্ক ফ্যাশন এর মধ্যে নিয়ে আসার ট্রেন্ড বজায় রেখেছিল। সব মিলিয়ে বেশ সফলতার সঙ্গে অনুষ্ঠিত হয় ফ্যাশান শো টি।

এরপর কিছু প্রশ্ন উত্তর পর্বের মুখোমুখি হয়েছিল recital spherical ম্যাগাজিন।

প্রশ্ন(১): “হটাৎ স্ট্রিট ফ্যাশন শো’ ই কেন?”

উত্তর: “পুরোপুরিভাবে স্ট্রীট ফ্যাশন শো এটাকে বলা যায়না। আসলে এই পরিকল্পনাটা আমার হঠাৎই মাথায় এসেছিল যখন…..(একটু থেমে)অনেকেই হয়তো শুনেছেন যায় আমার আগের এক্সিবিশন টা সেটা কলকাতাতেই হয়েছিল যার থিম ছিল ‘বাংলার মুখ’। That’s a series actually, we all know that last year was so pathetic for us. আর সেটা আমরা যখন সার্ভাইভ করতে পেরেছি, তো এরপর আমরা কি করতে পারি! We can create something new for…. For our new generation for our self as well। কেন কি মাঝেমধ্যে আমাদের নিজেদের কেউ একটু মোটিভেটেড রাখতে হয় আর নিজেদেরকে একটু বুষ্ট আপ করতেই হয় and that’s all about how you built yourself to be a kind person, what we are supposed to think for contribution। কন্ট্রিবিউশন বলতে আমি শুধুমাত্র টাকা পয়সার কথা বলছি না, যথাযথভাবে এডুকেশন, প্রপার কালচারাল অ্যাকটিভিটি। এগুলো আমাদের জন্য খুব দরকার আমাদের সমাজের জন্য দরকার। আর আমরা তো এখনো স্ট্রাগলার মাত্র, হ্যাঁ স্মল আর্টিস্ট বলা যেতে পারে। তো সেই জায়গায় দাঁড়িয়ে আমরা কি করতে পারি! আমরা সকলে এক জায়গায় জড়ো হয়ে নিজেদের মতো করে আমাদের কালচার বা আর আর্টস কে এক্সিকিউট করতে পারি সেটা সেলিব্রেট করতে পারি। That’s it. And that’s the idea comes from (মুচকি হেসে)”…

প্রশ্ন(২): “আমাদের সমাজে এখনও মডেলিং ক্যারিয়ার কে ভালো চোখে নেওয়া হয় না অথবা অনেকেই হয়তো করতে চায় কিন্তু বাড়ি থেকে সাপোর্ট পায় না।– সেই বিষয়ে কি বলতে চান?”

উত্তর: “(একটু হেসে) সেটা তো আমার মনে হয় ইন্ডিয়াতে কোন কিছুই ভাল ভাবে নেওয়া হয় না, আউট অফ দা বক্স কিছু হয়ে গেলেই সেটা মেনে নেওয়াটা একটা সমস্যা আমাদের দেশের।

আর বাড়ির সাপোর্টের কথা বলতে গেলে আমি যা বুঝতে পেরেছি, আমি এটা পরিষ্কার বলতে পারি….(ইতস্তত বোধ করে) ব্যাপারটা বলা ঠিক কিনা জানিনা, তবে দেখো স্পষ্ট কথা our mothers and sisters are not safe at least here।আমাদের সমাজের জন্য তাহলে কিছু বলার থাকে না। এর জন্য এডুকেসান টা খুবই জরুরী। আজ যদি আমরা এম্পাওয়ার্মেন্ট এর কথা বলি তাহলে, আমার মনে হয় আমার মা একজন বড় উদাহরণ। ছোট থেকে মাকে দেখেছি, বুঝেছি, লড়াই করাটাও শিখেছি। তো আমার মনে হয় এই যেকোনো কোনো কিছুকে মেনে নেওয়াটাই আমাদের সমস্যা”।

প্রশ্ন(৩): “আচ্ছা আপনাদের এই ইন্ডাস্ট্রিতে (মডেলিং) আসার সঠিক পর্যায় অনেকেই তো জানেনা– তাদের উদ্দেশ্যে কিছু বলতে চান?”

উত্তর: “I think there are lots of good agencies in Bombay and Delhi but in Calcutta it’s such a…… I am sorry to say but in Calcutta there is no hope for modelling career।সাময়িকভাবে হয়তো তুমি কোন কমার্শিয়াল প্রজেক্ট করার সুযোগ পেয়ে যাবে কিন্তু পার্মানেন্ট ভাবে এখানে কোন ভালো সুবিধা বা ব্যবস্থা নেই। নরমালি এখানে তুমি বাকি ছেলেদের জামা কাপড় দেখলে হয়তো বুঝতে পারবে যে they are not so fashionable and they don’t even understand about their own culture as well। আজ আমাদের বাঙ্গালীদের কালচার এ ধুতি-পাঞ্জাবি পড়া আমরা কমবেশি ভুলেই গেছি। So fashion revolution is very important here।

আয় আর্থিক দিক দিয়েও নিজেদেরকে দাঁড় করানো টাও খুব ইম্পর্টেন্ট। তো সেটা নিয়েও লড়াই চলছে। আমার মনে হয়(একটু হেসে) রাজ্য সরকার বা আমাদের সরকার নিশ্চয়ই কিছু ভাবছেন এ বিষয়”।

প্রশ্ন(৪): “শো–এর জন্য এই ক্যাফে টাই কেন বেছে নিলেন”?

উত্তর: “এই ক্যাফেটা আমরা পছন্দ করেছি কারণ জায়গাটা সত্যিই খুব সুন্দর আর ইন্টারেস্টিং। I like the urban places where we can put pictures apart from academy, apart from any big gallery। পয়সাও ডিমান্ড করে আর আমরা এখনো স্ট্রাগলার’স, আমাদের পক্ষে এখনই এতটা ব্যয় করা সম্ভব নয়। আর এখানে আমরা যে কজন কাজ করেছি সবই আমার বন্ধুদের সাথে কোলাবোরেট করে। যেমন শঙ্খ(ক্যাফে ওনার), অভিক(মুল আয়োজক), অঞ্জন (জুয়েলারি ডিজাইনার) ওরা সবাই আমার বন্ধু। ওদের সবার সাহায্য ছাড়া এটা সম্ভব ছিল না”।

প্রশ্ন(৫): “এর পরের শো‘এর পরিকল্পনা কিছু করেছেন কি?”

উত্তর: “হ্যাঁ এরপরই ১৬ তারিখে আমাদের আরেকটা প্রোগ্রাম আছে, যদিও সেটা ফটোগ্রাফি এক্সিবিশন কিন্তু সেখানেও আমার কিছু অন্যরকমভাবে ফ্যাশন শো করার ইচ্ছা আছে। খুব ইচ্ছা আছে।( হেসে বললেন) I want to do something interesting, more interesting”।

এই পরিকল্পনাকে সাধুবাদ জানিয়ে AD RISHABH  দ্বারা পরিচালিত হলো বাংলারমুখ একজিবিশন ২০২০-২০২১

কোনো বিরাট আয়োজন নয়, বরং ভিষন সাদামাটা ভাবে পরিবেশন করা হলো মন ভরে যাওয়ার মতো একটি অনুষ্ঠান;

২৬ তারিখ ২০২০ এর, টালিগঞ্জে একটি হলের রুফ টপে অনুষ্ঠিত হয়েছিল অনুষ্ঠানটি। ক্লাসিকাল ডান্স ও ফ্যাশন শো দুটি মিলে একপ্রকার মন ভালো হয়ে যাওয়ার মতো একটি পরিবেশে অংশগ্রহণ করার জন্য অনেকেই হাজির হয়েছিল, তা বলাই বাহুল্য।

এরকমই সুন্দর এক অভিজ্ঞতার সম্মুখীন হওয়ার সাথে, সেখানে নিজের শো কে নিয়ে কথা বললেন AD RISHABH,


প্রশ্ন(১) “হঠাৎ এই বাংলার মুখ নামটা রাখলেন কেন?”

উ: “বাংলাটা সবসময়ই আমার মনে প্রাণে, মন প্রাণ থেকে বাঙালি। ইন দ্য সেন্স লাইক ,
যা খুব বেশি কমার্শিয়াল নয় কিন্তু বড্ড কাছের। এবং সুন্দরও। যা আমরা সকলেই জানি।

Every person are beautiful every person are different to others, so i just because of that personally realized for as an artist anyone can be an artist, if they really want.


তাছাড়াও আরও একটা জিনিস আমাকে খুব বেশি আকর্ষণ করেছে সেটা হলো, এখানে যদি আপনি দেখেন প্রতিটি ছবিতে সাধারণ মানুষরা রয়েছেন। কেও ডাক্তার আছেন কেউ উকিল আছেন , সবাই সাধারণ মানুষ। বাংলারই মানুষ।
খুব কমই আছেন যারা প্রফেশনাল। তাই বাংলার মুখ।”

প্রশ্ন(২) “পরবর্তী পরিকল্পনা সম্পর্কে কিছু ভেবেছেন?”

উ: “এই একজিবিশন টা আমাদের সিডনি তেও হবে। তাছাড়াও লন্ডন, আমেরিকা। যেখানে প্রবাসী বাঙালিরা থাকেন। এবং আমরা সকলেই যুক্ত একে অপরের সঙ্গে আর্টের মাধ্যমে। এবং আমি মনে করি যে এই আর্ট হলো একটি ভাষা, যা গোটা পৃথিবীকে একে অপরের সঙ্গে যুক্ত করে রাখে।”

প্রশ্ন(৩) “এর আগেও কি এরকম কিছু করার প্রচেষ্টা করেছিলেন? নাকি এটাই প্রথম কাজ?”

উঃ “এর আগেও গতবছর একটা ছোট্ট প্রচেষ্টা করেছিলাম।(২০১৯) কারণ আমাকে বুঝতে হবে যে দর্শক কেমনভাবে রিয়াক্ট করছেন। আমরা গঙ্গার ঘাটে যখন এরকমই কিছু করার চেষ্টা করছি, একজন রিকশাওয়ালা এসে বললেন এরকম কাজতো আমরা কোনোদিনও দেখিনি। খুব ভালো লাগল তোমারা যে এই কাজগুলো করছো।
এগুলোই খুব বড় পাওনা। একজন রিকশাওয়ালা তো খুব বেশি লাক্সারি লাইফ লিড করেনা। তাদের কাছে জীবনটাতো খুব কষ্টের। তাদের কাছে এই সুযোগতো হয়ে ওঠে না যে তারা কোনো একজিবিশন দেখতে যাবেন। তাই এই ছোট্ট পরিকল্পনার মাধ্যমে যদি তারা কাজের ফাঁকে গাড়ি চালানোর মধ্যেও চারটে ছবি দেখতে পারবেন। এই তাদের এন্টারটেনমেন্ট এর কথা ভেবেই আমর এই বাংলার মুখ।”

প্রশ্ন(৪) “এতটা কম সময়ে ডেকোরেশন এর দিকটা কি করে সামলালেন ? কি করে মাথায় এলো এই থিমের কথাটা ?”

উ: “(একটু হেসে) আচ্ছা ডেকোরেশন নিয়ে আমি একটা কথা বলবো! যেহেতু এটা একটা কোলাবোরেশন প্রজেক্ট তাই আমরা কেউই এখানে টাকা ইনভেস্ট করতে পারতাম না। এবং আমরা যে সময়ের মধ্য দিয়ে যাচ্ছি, আমরা কেউই তা পেড়ে উঠতাম না। আমরা যেটা করলাম-আমরা যেটা করতে চাইলাম যে কম পয়সায় কি করা যায়।
প্রথম যে কথাটা মাথায় এলো সেটা হলো আমাদের লো-বাজেট। এবং দ্বিতীয় যে কথাটা মাথায় এলো সেটা ছিল বাংলার কোন ফুল আমাদের সাথে খুব বেশি ভাবে যুক্ত এবং কোন রংটা আমার খুব পছন্দের, সাম হাউ আমার লাল রঙটা ভীষণ পছন্দের। তখন আমি আমার বন্ধুদেরকে বললাম যে, উল গো ফর্ হলুদ এবং লাল।”

প্রশ্ন(৫) “প্রস্তুতি কবে থেকে শুরু করেছিলেন ?”

উ: “প্রস্তুতির জন্য মাস খানেক অথবা তারও কম সময় পেয়েছি আমরা। হঠাৎ করে এই একজিবিশন টার কথা আমাদের মাথায় আসে। যে আমরা কিছু একটা করি। বছর শেষে খারাপ স্মৃতি প্রচুর গেছে আমাদের। এত খারাপ স্মৃতি গেছে যে কিছু একটা হোক এই ভেবে আমাদের ঘুমাতে যাওয়া উচিত। এবং আজ আমি যদি মরেও যাই (হেসে) হয়তো আমি খারাপ স্বপ্নটা দেখে মরবো না। একটা স্বপ্ন দেখছি, যেখান থেকে আমি শুরু করতে পারবো। এটাই হচ্ছে সেই শুরু। আমরা আরও খাটতে চাই, আরও কাজ করতে চাই।
কলকাতায় আরও ইয়ং আর্টিস্ট রয়েছেন তাদের সবাইকে কানেক্ট করতে চাই। যেখানে মানুষ শুধু পয়সার জন্য আসবে না। যেখানে মানুষ মেডিটেশনের জন্য আসবে। এবং আমার কাছে ফোটোগ্রাফি মেডিটেশনের কাজ করে। আমি খুব শান্তি পূর্ণ ভাবে থাকতে পছন্দ করি। মেন্টাল পিস মাইন্ডেড। এবং দিনের শেষে মনে হয় আমার মনে হয়, আমি খুব খুশি হয়েছি এই কাজটা করে। শুধু আমি নয় এখানে যতগুলো ছেলে মেয়েরা অংশগ্রহণ করেছেন, মডেল হিসেবে কিংবা ফটোগ্রাফার হিসেবে , প্রত্যেকেই খুশি হয়েছেন।”

প্রশ্ন(৬) “পরবর্তী প্রজেক্ট এর কাজ কি ইতিমধ্যেই শুরু করে দিয়েছেন ? খুব বেশি দিন তো আর সময় নেই! আজকের এই সাকসেসফুল ইভেন্ট এর মধ্যেই লুকিয়ে আছে পরবর্তী কাজের জন্য কোনো পরিকল্পনা?”

উ: “আমার মনে হয় ওটার শুরু আমাদের মাথায় মাথায় হয়ে গেছে। কারণ কোনো কিছু হঠাৎ করে সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়ে করা যায় না । বিশেষকরে কলকাতায়।
আমি সমস্ত পুলিশ থানা গুলোতে গিয়ে কথা বলার চেষ্টা করি। কোথাও গিয়ে আমি কারোর কাছে থেকে কোনো অনুমতি পাই নি। তবুও থেমে না থেকে আমি রয়টার্স এ গিয়ে কলকাতা পুলিশ কমিশনার এর সহকারী পুলিশ কমিশনার এর সাথে কথা বলি। এবং তিনি পারমিশান দিলেন এবং বলেন যে, কলকাতায় তুমি এই কাজটা করতে পারো। তবে একটা নির্দিষ্ট টাইমের মধ্যে। তবে খুব বেশি ঘিঞ্জি বা অতিরিক্ত গ্যানজাম যেন না হয়।
তবে পরবর্তী কাজ আমরা কলকাতা শুধু নয়, কলকাতা সংলগ্ন হুগলি, হাওড়া খুব স্বল্প খরচে এবং কম সময়ের জন্য করা যেতেই পারে।”


প্রশ্ন(৭) “এখন প্রায় ২০২০ এর শেষ, তবুও অনেক মানুষ এই ফ্যাশন বা মডেলিং ইন্ডাস্ট্রিকে ভালো চোখে দেখে না বরং এই ইন্ডাস্ট্রিকে অনেকেই ব্ল্যাক ইন্ডাস্ট্রি বলে থাকেন, এই সম্পর্কে কি মতামত ?”

উ: “যেকোনো ইন্ডাস্ট্রিরই ব্ল্যাক ইন্ডাস্ট্রি, যদি সেটিকে সেইভাবে নেওয়া হয়। দাবার দুটি ছক আছে। সাদা আর কালো, যেভাবে বিষয়টিকে দেখা হবে, বিষয়টি তেমনই। আমাদের এখানে ঠিক মত খাবার নেই, মানুষ খেতে পারে না, নিজের যত্নই ঠিক করে করতে পারে না। সেটা কালো জগৎ হবে কি করে? (একটু হেসে) আমার মনে হয় এবার সোসাইটির মানুষজনদের ধারণাটা বদলানো উচিত। রেসিজম থেকে বেরিয়ে এসে যদি আমাদের কাজের ভালো দিক গুলো তারা দেখে তাহলে অবশ্যই আমাদের মডেলিং ইন্ডাস্ট্রি আর খারাপ থাকবে না তাদের কাছে।”
